From October 20, 2019 to January 6, 2020 Casa Mantegna hosts Similiter in Pictura, an exhibition of contemporary painting inspired by the work of Vinci. Promoted by the Province of Mantua, on a project of the Container Lab Association and with the collaboration of Dr. Cristina Renso, the exhibition brings together a total of 60 works, some of them of considerable size, made by artists Luca Bonfanti, Enzo Rizzo and Togo.
The exhibition, accompanied by the critical reading of Matteo Galbiati, Alberto Moioli and Elena Pontiggia, is the result of years of study and reflection conducted by the three artists on the work of Leonardo da Vinci, whose relevance and depth are featured by means of the language of contemporary iconography.
The new interpretation performed by Bonfanti, Rizzo and Togo focuses on the infinite meanings that Leonardo’s work retains, revealing them in a dialogue – apparently never interrupted – between classical and contemporary culture. The three artists, indeed, deal with the complexity of Leonardo da Vinci in its entirety, without drawing boundaries of meaning (or value) between his artistic productions and his scientific discoveries.
For this reason, in addition to the artworks, 30 reproductions of Vincian machines (made by Giorgio Mascheroni) will be exhibited, together with video installations and touch screens that, placed along the way, will integrate the observation with educational content. An original reading is also featured by the video Leonardo tells “The Last Supper”, created by Maurizio Sangalli with Massimiliano Loizzi, Marco Ballerini, Alberto Patrucco and Alfredo Colina. Finally, an interactive smartphone application will allow visitors to deepen the contents of each work on display, then share them on social media.
The guided tours are organized by Alkémica Cooperativa Sociale Onlus, which for the occasion can count, exceptionally, on some scientific instruments of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, inspired by Leonardo’s machines and made available by the Physics Laboratory of the Liceo Virgilio,.
With the workshop entitled Leonardo: le macchine, le idee, le visioni, Alkémica Cooperativa Sociale Onlus will guide students and the public through didactic-educational paths to understand Vinci’s machines and show the implications on modern thought.
